Traffic Source: The Channels That Bring Visitors

A traffic source is the channel or origin through which a visitor arrives at a website: such as organic search, paid ads, direct visits, referrals, social media, or email.

Glossary

Traffic Source

A traffic source identifies where a website's visitors come from. Analytics tools group visits into channels such as Organic Search (unpaid Google or Bing results), Paid Search, Direct (typing the URL or using a bookmark), Referral (links from other sites), Organic and Paid Social, and Email. Each channel reflects a different way a shopper discovered the store.

The mix of traffic sources tells a story about acquisition strategy. A store leaning on paid social is buying attention through Meta or TikTok ads; one dominated by organic search has invested in SEO and content; a healthy share of direct and email traffic suggests a returning, loyal customer base. Most successful stores blend several sources rather than depending on one.

Exact traffic figures for a store you don't own are always estimates, inferred from web-wide data samples and modeling rather than measured directly. They are best read as relative signals, which channels dominate and roughly how much reach a store has. Not as precise counts.
