Conversion Rate
Conversion rate (CR) measures how effectively a website turns visitors into customers or leads. The formula is simple: divide the number of conversions by the number of visitors or sessions, then multiply by 100. If a store gets 5,000 sessions and 100 orders in a period, its conversion rate is 2 percent.
In ecommerce, 'conversion' usually means a completed purchase, though stores also track micro-conversions like add-to-carts, email sign-ups, and checkout starts. Reported averages vary widely by industry, traffic source, device, and price point; a figure in the low single digits is commonly cited as typical, but there is no universal 'correct' number.
Conversion rate is shaped by nearly every part of the funnel: product-market fit, price and offer, page speed, mobile experience, trust signals such as reviews, shipping terms, and checkout friction. Because it multiplies against traffic and average order value, even small improvements can meaningfully change revenue.
