What is Meta Pixel?
The Meta pixel is tracking code that Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, provides to advertisers. Once installed on a website, it loads an fbq() function that reports standard events (PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, and Purchase) back to the advertiser's Meta account.
Advertisers use that event data for three main jobs: measuring how many sales or leads an ad produced, optimizing delivery toward people likely to convert, and building custom and lookalike audiences for retargeting. On Shopify, the pixel is typically connected through the Facebook & Instagram sales channel or a marketing app rather than pasted in by hand.
Since Apple's App Tracking Transparency and the broader decline of third-party cookies, browser-based pixel data has become less complete. To compensate, many advertisers now run the Conversions API (CAPI) alongside the pixel, sending events server-to-server so conversions are still attributed even when the in-browser pixel is blocked.
Why it matters in e-commerce
A Meta pixel on a competitor's store shows that tracking for Facebook and Instagram ads is installed. It is a signal of intent, not proof that a campaign is running today: stores often keep a pixel long after they stop advertising, or install it before they start. To know whether ads are live, check the Meta Ad Library, which lists active campaigns.
